Braided Rugs

Braided rugs are definitely not your standard wool rugs. Braided rugs are constructed by weaving long strips of material together much the same way people do with long hair. This method of construction makes for a very durable rug. Early American settlers started using this rug making technique a long time ago. For the settlers they became a necessity because braided area rugs were a simple way to cover cracks and to warm cold flooring.

Braided rugs were very popular from 1890 to 1910 back then braiding carpet rugs was considered an art form. Although over the last century interest in braided rugs has waned, they still have a special place in American decor. Braided rugs represent what traditional American culture is all about, so they’re very significant in that respect.

Braided Rugs

Braided rugs are very durable and should last several decades if used and cared for properly. It’s very easy to clean dirt, dust and spills off a braided rug. Regular vacuuming won’t hurt braided rugs, and depending on the size, they should be lifted and clean underneath.

Braided rugs have changed considerably since their inception. Early braided rugs were only made in ovals and in limited pallets like a sisal rug today. contemporary rugs can be found in square and rectangular shapes, feature tighter weaves and can be found in some very vibrant colors. Two manufacturers that make some of the nicest braided rugs today are Colonial Mills and Capel Rugs.

A key component to any décor product is the cost. You’ll be glad to know that braided rugs cost a lot less than most other rugs especially a hand tied or hand tufted rug. They tend to be what you’d call discount rugs. And you won’t sacrifice comfort with braided rugs. No other rugs besides shag rugs are as warm and comfortable as braided rug.

The most common areas in a home where people use braided rugs are in the kitchen, laundry, bath rugs, hallways and bedrooms especially kids rugs. Most living rooms and dining rooms call for more formal style rugs like oriental rugs or persian rugs. There is much to like about braided rugs, and their range is quite diverse, so if you’re looking to combine history, comfort and affordability in your rug, not many do it better than braided rugs!
