Charles “Charlie” Kaoud hails from a long tradition of family, hard work and deep character. Just one member of the renowned Kaoud family, New England’s largest importer and retailer of Oriental Rugs and Area Rugs, Charlie got his start early in his father’s Connecticut store. Abe Kaoud built Kaoud Oriental Rugs with his brothers starting in the mid 1950s turning it into a thriving family business by the mid 1990s. Charlie and his older brother, Maurice, then expanded their father’s store into a chain of stores that cover most of Southern New England. Kaoud Oriental Rugs is a well-known name brand of rug stores through the hard work and business savvy that Charlie and Maurice learned from their father Abe, and their family.

Charlie’s formal education was at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut where he studied finance, marketing and business. After graduating in 1991, Charlie and his brother opened their first store together in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was during this time that he became well-know with the moniker “10% Charlie”. It was added to all Kaoud Oriental Rugs advertising to build the business brand and introduce Charlie to the public as the newest member of the Kaoud business family, it was enormously successful.
During the mid 1990s that Charlie became interested in ecommerce and what it meant to the future of retail. He started with his first website, BrassRods.com selling the decorative rods that go on grand staircases. Charlie used this experience to learn about how the online experience is different than the usual retail experience. Trust and brand loyalty are built in different ways online – but the need for customer service was always the same. Charlie felt that if he could translate his knowledge of both online commerce and retail experience, he and his family business could also succeed online.
Enter RugSale.com, once a small addition to the Kaoud Oriental Rugs family, it has grown into it’s own. Starting in 1999, RugSale.com was one of the first national online rug retailers and showcased dozens of name brand area rugs and runners at the lowest prices and with something new – free shipping and no sales tax. RugSale.com was on it’s way.
