Dampness results more often than not from over watering house plants placed directly on the carpet. A simple solution is to raise the planter, allowing you to see under its base and allow for ventilation.
In time, dampness causes mildew, discoloration and odors — or worse rots the threads and destroys the fabric. The solution to this damage is fairly simple. Always keep rugin a dry, well ventilated area.
As with moth damage, periodic inspections can help discover dampness issues, and deal with them before they can cause mildew or rot damage.
Animal urine, aside from causing an unpleasant smell, also results in dry rot and permanent staining or de-colorization of the dyes if not attended to promptly. Whenever accidents occur, clean the area thoroughly (go to pet stain solution). Keep an eye on the family pet for a time as they tend to go again repeatedly in the same places.
When water damage is discovered, no matter what the cause, the rug should be professionally cleaned immediately! Make sure the carpet is completely dry before replacing it flat on the floor or placing it in storage.
